GestureWorks Gameplay adds customizable touch controls to any PC game

The GestureWorks Gameplay program allows any video game running on a Windows 8 device to be played with an on-screen touch controller

The computer interaction experts at Ideum have developed a number of impressive multi-touch smart tables in the past, such as the Platform 46 and the Pano Touch Table, many of which were built around their proprietary GestureWorks software. Now the company is gearing up to release its GestureWorks Gameplay program, which is built around the same engine and allows any video game running on a Windows 8 device o be played with an on-screen touch controller.
With GestureWorks Gameplay installed, players will be able to create their own virtual controllers for any game, which will show up as an overlay on the action. Using a simple tool, gamers can add an assortment of buttons, joysticks, D-pads, switches, and scroll wheels right onto the screen and build a full set of controls from scratch. From there, each item can be moved anywhere on the display and altered in terms of size, color, opacity and labeling to form a unique controller that’s tailor-made for a specific title.

Once these controllers have been put together, users will be able to share them with other players through an online community and download any existing ones for a wide range of games. The touch control software even allows for two players to share the same screen and use their individual controllers on co-op games.

Besides adding digital buttons onto the screen, players can also program over 200 different gesture commands, swiping in front of a character to make them attack or tapping above them to trigger a jump, for instance.

Many PC gamers might balk at the idea of replacing a mouse and keyboard with an on-screen controller, but the addition of touch controls could make gaming on the go much easier, especially for people with a large backlog of titles to play. Some games that are less action-focused, like Trine, may actually benefit from them.

Currently, Ideum is allowing people to sign up for a beta of GestureWorks Gameplay through an official website. The beta will be released in October, with the full version of the software slated for November of this year.

In the meantime, you can watch the video below to see how GestureWorks Gameplay’s touch controls perform on a number of modern games.

Motorola Droid MAXX Shipping Ahead of August 20th Release

Verizon’s new Motorola Droid MAXX, and presumably the Motorola Droid Ultra, have begun shipping to customers ahead of their August 20th release date.
Earlier this week, there was a bit of controversy over the release dates of the Motorola Droid MAXX and the Droid Ultra, two of Verizon’s new Droid smartphones from Motorola. While the devices were initially announced with an August 20th release date, the devices saw their ship by dates slip to August 27th online causing some to suspect a delay.

The Droid MAXX from Verizon is shipping out ahead of is August 20th release.

Verizon cleared the air, telling prospective buyers that the devices will still be available on August 20th in-stores but that those who pre-ordered after the change in the date won’t see their devices ship out until later on.
The good news is that those who pre-ordered these devices prior to the date change are apparently seeing their devices shipping out ahead of projected August 20th delivery dates. The screenshot below, sent to Gotta Be Mobile by a tipster, shows the Droid MAXX being picked up by FedEx just a few short hours ago.

The Droid MAXX is shipping out ahead of its August 20th release date.
The tipster tells us that the device is expected to arrive on August 20th, the same date that was given as a ship by date shortly after the devices went up for pre-order. At this point, we can only confirm that the Droid MAXX is shipping but we imagine that the Droid Ultra, the other device set for arrival on August 20th, is shipping as well. Motorola’s third Droid smartphone, the Droid Mini, isn’t set to arrive until August 29th.

The Droid Ultra and Droid MAXX are entering a crowded field as Verizon is set to carry the HTC One on August 22nd and release the Moto X just a few short days later. The carrier is also expected to get the iPhone 5S and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 which are thought to be arriving in early September. Rumors have also suggested that the company will offer the rumored HTC One Max, a large screen version of the HTC One.

Verizon’s new Droids do have some likable features including high-resolution displays, speedy processors, solid cameras and durable designs. The Droid MAXX also features a massive battery that should offer consumes up to 48 hours in battery life, more than the Droid RAZR MAXX HD.

Motorola Meeting with Media This Week, But Not for Moto X?

Rumors of a potential Moto X, Motorola’s new flagship smartphone that’s been hitting the rumor mill for somet time now, reignited when the Google-owned smartphone-maker had sent out media invitations for an event this week scheduled for July 10 and July 11. However, as it turns out, the event may not be for the introduction of the Moto X Android smartphoneafter all according to information that CNET had acquired.

The publication says that Motorola and Googlewill have other news to share, but didn’t speculate on what that news would be. “However, we’re told by a source that Motorola has something else to share with journalists,” Eric Mack of CNET wrote in a blog post. “No more details are yet forthcoming.”

In recent days, there have been more leaks of a Motorola Droid Ultra and Motorola Droid Maxx handsets, where both devices appear to be extensions of Motorola’s current Droid RAZR HD and Droid RAZR Maxx HD lines. Potentially, these devices could be officially shown off this week to members of the media.

Initially, Internet personality Leo Laporte said on his podcast that he had received a personal invitation from Motorola’s Guy Kawasaki for an event for this week.

Scopri come farti Rimborsare parte della spesa del prossimo Viaggio !He said we’d really like you to come down to the Google campus for an event — small group of journalists, 50 people, two groups; July 10th and July 11th… I’m thinking it’s the phone.

Tech observers who have been watching Motorola also noticed that the pre-order announcement for the Moto X shows a summer scene of two people where their bodies form an “X” and an “I” suggesting that this would be for the roman numeral 11 for the July 11 announcement.

The July event would also take place in the midst of several other tech events happening for the week. Also in the San Francisco Bay Area, VentureBeat is scheduled to hold its MobileBeat conference while in New York City on July 11, Nokia will be holding its event that’s widely believed to introduce a 41-megapixel PureView version of the Windows Phone 8 Lumia smartphone.

Historically, Motorola had introduced a number of new smartphones during the summer launch. The company had introduced the T-Mobile Motorola CLIQ smartphone, Motorola’s first Android smartphone with a sliding QWERTY keyboard, at Giga OM’s Mobilize a few years ago in the summer time frame and it has launched a number of Droid releases with U.S. partner Verizon Wireless, including the Droid X, in the summer.

If the Moto X doesn’t launch this summer, another potential date that it could debut would be this fall alongside the introduction of the next iteration of Google’s mobile OS, colloquially known as Key Lime Pie and rumored to be either called Android 5.0.

popular Motorola Android smartphones.
The Google Play Store credit deal runs through March 4th,
and it is not tied to purchases on Motorola or a specific carrier.
Motorola also includes older phones like the original Droid RAZR, which
is already discounted.
With the $50 Google Play Store credit users can purchase apps,
movies, books and more from Google Play, which makes it an appealing
deal. Traditionally Google Play Store credit can not be used for
devices, so don’t plan on using it towards a Nexus 7.

Google I/O to see Motorola X with Key Lime Pie?

Google I/O to see Motorola X with Key Lime Pie?
Wake up! Yes, we know it’s Saturday, but an exciting new rumor is crackling through the community and we’re sure that you would want to hear it. First, a caveat. This story needs to be taken with a grain of salt, although it doesn’t make it any less exciting. Ready? Awake? Let’s proceed. According to the usual source of the anonymous kind, during this year’s Google I/O, which begins on May 15th, Google will present the Motorola X.

The Google Nexus 7 was introduced at last year's Google I/O
The Google Nexus 7 was introduced at last year’s Google I/O

According to the source, the Motorola X will have a 5 inch display that will be edge-to-edge like the Motorola DROID RAZR M. The device will run Android 5.0, Key Lime Pie, and will be the first Motorola handset that lets the world know that the company is owned by Google. The model will be available on multiple carriers, so it won’t be a Nexus model. The UI will feature some Motorola add-ons. To reiterate, this will not be a Verizon exclusive and appears to be Motorola and Google trying to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S III and the Samsung GALAXY Note II.

Google doesn’t usually introduce non-Nexus devices at Google I/O, so some traditions might be broken here. And remember, this is purely speculation at the moment. Still, it gives Motorola, Android, and Google fans-heck, fans of smartphones in general-something to think about over the next four months.

Motorola Atrix, Electrify and Photon 4G Won’t Get Ice Cream Sandwich

Last week, we told you that Motorola’s Ice Cream Sandwich update chart included some grim news for Motorola Atrix, Atrix 2 and Photon 4G owners and while Atrix 2 owners made it out unscathed, Motorola has cancelled Ice Cream Sandwich for the Atrix, Photon 4G and the Motorola Electrify as well.
In a post on Motorola’s forums and as displayed Motorola’s upgrade chart,
all three devices will remain on their current version of Android which
is Android 2.3 Gingerbread. All three were originally scheduled to be
getting Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich this year with the Atrix slated
for Q3 and the Electrify and Photon 4G scheduled for Q4.
Motorola, last week, slapped a “Further plans coming soon” moniker on
all four devices and at that point, their Ice Cream Sandwich updates
were up in the air. However, while the Atrix 2 received good news and
began receiving its Ice Cream Sandwich roll out last week, the Atrix 4G,
Photon 4G and Electrify will be receiving no such news.

The Motorola Photon 4G won’t get ICS.

This is obviously not the outcome that many owners were expecting
when the company decided to place the three on the upgrade chart earlier
this year but this is the situation that owners are going to have to
deal with.
It’s clear that these updates weren’t cooperating in testing and
rather than release buggy software, Motorola decided to scrap the
updates altogether.
Hopefully, the outcome is different for owners of the Droid Bionic who saw their Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade postponed to the fourth quarter shortly after a Motorola exec promised more transparency when it comes to major Android updates.
Motorola also reiterated this stance in their cancellation of the
Atrix, Photon and Electrify ICS updates saying that the company is
committed to better communication with its customers in regards to
Android software updates, even when it’s news that customers may not
want to hear.
Case in point, the ICS updates for the Atrix, Photon 4G and Electrify.

Voyager Legend Headset is Smarter Than it Looks

You know that moment when you’re driving to work, listening to the
radio and suddenly your cell phone rings? You fumble for your phone,
answer, but can’t hear anything. Frustrated, you put the handset down to
then realize your mistake: the phone was paired with your Bluetooth enabled headset, which is sitting on the seat next to you.

Say goodbye to those days and hello to the Voyager Legend by Plantronics.

To fend off your daily commute frustration, the Voyager Legend uses
technology that senses when you take off your headset, so it transfers
all calls to your handset – and vice versa. To answer an incoming call
with your headset off, keep a hand on the wheel and place the head set
back in your ear. Voila!

If you’re already wearing the headset, you’ll hear the Voyager Legend
announce who’s calling and you can choose to either “answer” or
“ignore” just by saying so.

The new Voyager Legend isn’t just for the commuter or professional
on-the-go, but anyone who wants to remain wirelessly connected to
friends. The Voyager Legend boasts three precisely tuned microphones and
an enhanced digital signal processor for improved clarity against
ambient noises such as wind or kids chattering in the back seat.

What also grabbed our attention was the mobile apps available for Android or iOS
devices, with a Find MyHeadset feature that is not seen in previous
devices. Plantronics also offers apps for voice and text services as
well as conference calls.

Similar products from Jabra, Jawbone or Motorola
– sans the Smart Sensor technology – run about the same price as the
Voyager Legend, which is one sale now at Amazon and Best Buy for $99
MSRP.

Remember, keep your hands at 10 and two and let us know what your think of this smart headset in the comments.
