Leaked Image of Sony’s Rumored Kumquat Smartphone Emerges

We had reported recently about a recent list of leaked product names from Sony’s XPERIA smartphone camp, and now we may have a clearer picture, literally, of what one of those devices may look like. The Sony Kumquat, which bears the product number ST25i, has been depicted in a new leaked image. The device bears a similar styling as the recently announced Sony XPERIA S smartphone, which debuted at CES 2012, with a lighted strip at the bottom housing the Android navigation keys.

The device is expected to be the lesser expensive model in Sony’s upcoming XPERIA lineup and will be a little brother to the XPERIA S and the AT&T-bound XPERIA Ion, which boasts 4G LTE connectivity.

The phone is expected to be announced in February at Mobile World Congress.

One Laptop Per Child Debuts Rugged Tablet for Students in the Developing World

One Laptop Per Child will unveil its XO 3.0 tablet at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Monday. The fully functional tablet is designed to be inexpensive, use little energy and brave extreme weather conditions.
The rugged tablet includes the Marvell ARMADA PXA618 SOC processor, Avastar Wi-Fi SOC, standard or Pixel Qi sunlight-readable display, and supports Android and Linux operating systems. Unlike any other tablet on the market, it can be powered by solar energy, other alternative sources or hand-cranks.
“We’re proud to introduce the XO 3.0 tablet, showcasing the design, durability and performance features that make it a natural successor for our current laptops, which have been distributed to more than 2.4 million children in 42 countries and in 25 languages,” Edward McNierney, chief technology officer of One Laptop Per Child said. “The XO 3.0 builds on many of the technology breakthroughs we made with the XO 1.75, including the use of the Marvell ARMADA PXA618 processor, resulting in a significant decrease in power consumption — a critical issue for students in the developing world.”

The released images of the XO 3.0 tablet seen don’t look much like the ones the One Laptop Per Child shared when it first announced it was working to develop an $100 laptop. The model set to debut at CES appears larger and more rugged.
The non-profit also announced it is ready to ship more than 75,000 units of the XO 1.75 laptop to students Uruguay and Nicaragua in March 2012.
Take a look at the XO 3.0. Do you think there’s an advantage to putting tablets in classrooms over laptops? Let us know in the comments.

USB 3.0 Is Coming to Smartphones and Tablets

By the end of 2012 smartphones and tablet devices will sport a USB 3.0-based microUSB connector, which will allow speedier data transfer than the current USB 2.0 standard.

USB 3.0 theoretically allows for data transfer rates of around 625 MB/s, which is 10 times faster than USB 2.0, whose maximum data transfer speed is 60 MB/s. The USB 3.0 transfer speed on mobile devices won’t be that fast, but it will be much faster than now.

“What takes 15 minutes will roughly take 1 minute and 10 seconds,” said Rahman Ismail, CTO of the USB Implementers Forum at the CES trade show in Las Vegas.

Mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets will also recharge more quickly through USB 3.0.

To be able to implement USB 3.0 in the context of mobile devices, the USB Implementers Forum will have to develop new specifications for the standard. “We’re coming out with new specs, new areas where we will make it very power efficient, power friendly,” said Ismail.

USB Implementers Forum also said it aims to reduce the size of USB 3.0 ports on laptops, as it’s becoming a limiting factor in laptop thinness.

Chameleon Computer: Lenovo IdeaPad YOGA Twists into Tablet

Buy-one, get-one free. Half off. Two-for-one. Consumers love getting something extra.

Lenovo‘s new IdeaPad YOGA is being marketed as a four-in-one device. The chameleon-like computer can switch from a laptop to a tablet in three positions: flat, easel-like for touchscreen-based working, and a propped-up position. The company introduced the device at CES in Las Vegas on Monday.

Open up the laptop to see the full-size notebook with keyboard and leather palm rest. Fold it at the hinges to create a 13-inch touch-screen tablet.

The YOGA operates on Windows 8 and should offer up to eight hours of battery life. The company says the device is the “industry’s thinnest convertible ultrabook.” It measures 0.67 inches thin and 3.1 lbs.

“It is clear to us that consumers want their four screens: mobile devices, tablets, notebooks and smart TVs — and they want them to work together seamlessly, anytime, anywhere,” says Yang Yuanqing, Chairman and CEO, Lenovo. “The IdeaPad YOGA multi-mode notebook redefines the convergence and convertible user experience by bringing together the best of traditional PCs, with the best of tablets and more.”

The IdeaPad YOGA multimode notebook will be available in the second half of 2012 with an estimated starting retail price of $1,199.

The Lenovo IdeaPad YOGA is marketed as a 4-in-1 device. Really, it’s a 2-in-1, but users might find it useful nonetheless.

New ViewPhone 3 Accepts Dual SIM Cards

ViewSonic’s ViewPhone 3, which accepts dual SIM cards, will be unveiled at CES next week and be available for the first time in the United States.

The dual SIM feature, which is popular in markets outside the U.S., can be used to keep business separate from personal calls. An ad for the model suggests one SIM card for business calls and one for personal to allow for more “personal freedom and privacy.”

Until now, the ViewPhone was only available in Latin America and Asia.

According to a study cited in the press release, about 27% of the total 568 million mobile subscriptions in Latin American are classified as “multiple subscriptions,” which means customers have more than one SIM card.

Since the phone uses two SIM cards, it’s possible to have two data plans. This can be a money-saving measure when traveling or if one data plan is used for making voice calls only. If ViewPhone 3 owners have a problem with network coverage, they can switch to the other card to connect to a network.

The ViewPhone 3 uses Android’s 2.3 Gingerbread operating system and has 512 MB of memory, plus a micro SD card slot. The phone is also capable of taking video and has an auto focus camera.

The ViewPhone 3 will be unveiled at CES on Jan. 10. The price ranges from $250-$299.

Does the ViewPhone 3 appeal to you? Tell us in the comments.

The $100 OLPC Tablet Is Really Real and Debuting at CES

The $100 OLPC Tablet Is Really Real and Debuting at CES

The $100 OLPC Tablet Is Really Real and Debuting at CESBuilding on its success with laptops designed for developing countries, the One Laptop Per Child project is set to unveil a long-awaited tablet at CES next week. Here’s what you get for $100.

The OLPC has been kicking around the idea of a super-affordable tablet for over a year. Originally known as the XO-3, but now dubbed the XO 3.0, the tablet will feature an 8-inch 1024×768 screen with some models also offering a PixelQi 3qi display that mimics E-paper. A Marvell Armada PXA618 chip and 512MB of RAM reside in the tablet’s ruggedized shell and will run either Linux Sugar or Android OS.

With a bare-bones feature set, the OLPC tablet should cost about $100 per unit—up from the original estimated price of $75, but still way cheaper than virtually any other tablet on the market.

The coolest feature that the XO 3.0 can be powered by hand-cranking—to the tune of 10 minutes of run time for every minute of work. Why isn’t this available on, well, everything? I’d gladly spin a handle for a few minutes if it meant I wouldn’t have to beg for outlet time at coffee shops, carry spare chargers, and constantly dread the “low battery” notification.

Nuovo tablet Toshiba con Tegra 3?

Nuovo tablet Toshiba con Tegra 3?AnTuTu on the site would be found credible traces of a new Toshiba tablet, probably with the new quad-core Nvidia Tegra SoC 3, already seen for Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime.

In a list published on the site AnTuTu have appeared in scores of some benchmarks performed with a mysterious tablet, called Tostab06. For some clues which is thought to be a new device, Toshiba, probably powered by the Nvidia Tegra System on a Chip 3, a quad core processor at 1.3 GHz frequency. The reason is simple: the words Tostab06 would in fact perfectly in line with the code name of the tablet of the previous Japanese manufacturer.

ToshTab06 Antutu

In fact, the 10.1-inch Toshiba Tablet AT100 (AT300 in Japan) was listed as Tostab03, the Toshiba AT1S0 (AT3S0 always in Japan) was instead the Tostab04 and finally the Toshiba AT20 0 (AT700 Japanese soil) was designated as Tostab05. Infatti il tablet da 10.1 pollici Toshiba AT100 (AT300 in Giappone) era indicato come Tostab03 , il Toshiba AT1S0 (AT3S0 sempre in Giappone) era invece il Tostab04 e infine il Toshiba AT20 0 (AT700 sul suolo nipponico) era designato come Tostab05 . Regarding the hardware configuration there are no explicit recommendations but here it is suggested based on the frequency of the processor, shown at 1400 MHz and the results produced, which would be roughly aligned with those obtained with the same benchmark Asus Eee Top Pad Transformer .

At the moment there are no other reports of any kind, but the possibility of a tablet with Nvidia Tegra 3 Toshiba is very believable, the rest on the market soon Acer would also be debuting a similar solution . If the rumors prove to be founded is therefore likely that already at the next CES in Las Vegas in January 2012 we will live this tablet.

LG details 55-inch OLED TV at CES 2012

LG details 55-inch OLED TV, will show off its true colors at CES 2012

While building the world’s first 55-inch OLED TV panel is nice, it’s not worth much unless you put an actual TV around it and LG Electronics will have the total package on display next week at CES. Today’s press release reveals more about LG’s “4-Color Pixel” and Color Refiner technology it’s implementing to bring consistent, accurate colors that it claims will be other OLED TV’s abnormal color gamut. LG’s press release doesn’t mention production plans or pricing, but all of this is squeezed into a frame that’s just 4mm thick with a narrow bezel and weight of 7.5kg — we’ll let our eyes decide on the quality of its colors once we meet in person.

LG To Debut Second Intel-Powered Smartphone At CES 2012

lg-intel

“If at first you don’t succeed, try try again.” It looks like LG and Intel have taken that old adage English: Mobile phone LG P500 Optimus Oneto heart, if a new report is to be believed. The Korea Times reports that LG will debut an Intel-powered smartphone at CES 2012, but the bigger question is whether or not the device will ever make it to market.

LG and Intel’s first mobile partnership yielded an Android smartphone running on Intel’s Moorestown chipset for CES 2011, but the device was ultimately scrapped. The reason for its premature demise? As the story goes, the device died because of it’s “lack of marketability.”English: LG Logo

LG’s brass certainly thinks their Intel smartphone is viable — according to one of the Times’ executive sources, the device could be released as soon this March. Still, the original LG-Intel phone was pegged with a 2011 release date, so take those claims with a grain of salt for bow.

Hopefully LG’s second swing at an Intel-powered phone fares a little better — it’s said to run on Intel’s next-generation Medfield system-on-a-chip, and early tests have yielded some pretty impressive benchmarks when compared to NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon MSM8260 SoCs.

Of course, the real competition is yet to come, as nearly every player in the mobile chipset market is hard at work on their next-generation platforms. Intel has a lot of brand recognition when it comes to PCs, but their lack of presence in the mobile market to date could mean that Medfield could drown in a sea of established ARM-based chipsets.

That’s why the partnership with LG is so critical — despite their handset division spending a few quarters in the red, LG is still the number two handset OEM in the U.S. Having a major hardware vendor taking a chance on their new platform could establish Intel as a real player in the mobile space, and right now Intel’s mobile efforts could use all the visibility they can get.

Sony Ericsson ‘Super Phone’ Has a 13-Megapixel Camera and LTE

According to a new entry on the official Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) site, Sony Ericsson is getting ready to release the LT28at, a high-end smartphone which the company refers to as “super phone.”

The details on the Bluetooth SIG site are scarce, but LT28at will come with a 13-megapixel camera, LTE support and a 4.55-inch 720p “Reality Display,” all of which puts it somewhere at the top of the company’s current smartphone lineup.

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LED Flash and front-facing camera are also on board, of course, but the release date is missing. It’s not too far-fetched to assume we might see SE’s definition of “super phone” in January, at next year’s CES.
