Samsung would be releasing the Galaxy S5 in February 2014

A few weeks ago, Samsung announced the Galaxy Note 3. Several months before that, the Samsung Galaxy S4. The year before that, there was the Galaxy Note 2 and the Galaxy S3. With a familiar pattern expected in 2014, many consumers already have their eyes peeled for Samsung Galaxy S5 rumors and fortunately, there have been several that have emerged in recent weeks.
Galaxy S5

Samsung, like Apple, has fallen into a predictable pattern as far as flagship launches are concerned. Like Apple, Samsung has stuck to a year cycle for its big name devices with Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series getting updated year after year. Last year, Samsung saw great success with its dual flagship approach when the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note 2 not only dominated the Android smartphone world but the entire smartphone world. Only Apple’s iPhone could match the might of Samsung’s flagships.

So it came as no surprise this year that the company had two more Galaxy S and Galaxy Note models up its sleeve. Early in the year, it was the Galaxy S4 that dominated consumer attention. Later in the year, it was the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 that captivated buyers with its rumors and ultimately, its launch. And while those two devices will dominate the landscape for the rest of the year, there are already signs of next year’s arrivals.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 remains firmly in the shadows but it’s the Samsung Galaxy S5 that has crept out from the darkness and into the light. Over the past month or so, we’ve seen a number of Galaxy S5 rumors emerge, some credible some flimsy, starting the canvas that will at one point next year become complete.

With the Galaxy S5 launch a few months away at least, we want to dig in early and offer prospective buyers a look at what we’ve seen and heard about the upcoming successor to the Galaxy S4.
//www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/h_B7Pmt8WGEFor most people, the most important bits of information are a device’s launch date, meaning its announcement date, and its release date, the day that it comes out onto shelves. Unsurprisingly, we’ve seen Galaxy S5 rumors already point to some possibilities when it comes to a launch date and a release date.

An early rumor from ETNews suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S5 would arrive in March, the same month as the Samsung Galaxy S4. In the year previous, the Galaxy S3 arrived in early May and was released later in the month. So, the Galaxy S4 launch was seen as early for the Galaxy S series. It also gave Samsung a significant jump on the iPhone 5s which launched last month and put a ton of space between it and the Galaxy Note 3 launch in early September.

History, and the initial whispers about a March launch date, were thrown into flux thanks to a report from Korean news site Naver which claims that Samsung is considering speeding up the Samsung Galaxy S launch and could potentially be hosting an event in January, the same month as the annual CES conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Samsung, in the past, has skipped trade shows for its smartphone launches so even if it does launch in January, there’s a chance that it won’t happen in Las Vegas. Samsung however is known to launch devices in close proximity to major events, IFA 2013 and the Galaxy Note 3 being an example of this, so it’s possible that we could see Sin City emerge as a possible launch city.

At this point, we wouldn’t put too much stock into any of this. The Samsung Galaxy S4 went through a similar routine with its launch date. MWC 2013 was mentioned as a candidate early in the Galaxy S4 rumor process and that didn’t pan out. Still, with Apple rumored to be debuting a big time iPhone 6 with a larger display, and Galaxy S4 sales said to be waning, Samsung might have motivation to get a new flagship out earlier than expected.
Release Date

The same report also suggested that Samsung would be releasing the Galaxy S5 in February, a month after its announcement. Again, this makes a lot of sense, if the launch date happens to be in January. Typically, Samsung pushes its devices out about a month after launch so it could be that it does the same with the Galaxy S5.
With Mobile World Congress set for February in Barcelona, it could be that the company debuts the device in the United States in January and shows the device off again, in Europe, in February, close to its release. Or not. Again, these rumors should be taken with an immense grain of salt as plans can certainly change between now and launch.

If the Galaxy S5 were to launch in March, we would expect it to arrive in April. So at the very least, a Galaxy S5 release is likely within the first two quarters of the year as Samsung looks to compete with a possible iPhone launch in the middle of next year.
Design

Samsung fans and average consumers have, for years, been clamoring for Samsung to release a premium design for its flagship smartphone. While many consumers prefer the plastic because of the microSD card slot for expanded storage and removable back for use with an extended battery, others have been campaigning for a design that can rival HTC and Apple.

Earlier this year, Samsung defended the Galaxy S4′s plastic design saying that it afforded consumers those benefits and that it allowed the company to avoid any supply issues because it could get plastic devices off of the supply lines faster. The Galaxy S4 did not experience any significant supply issues while the metal HTC One and iPhone 5s saw their fair share of problems at launch.

And yet, it appears that Samsung is listening. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 debuted with a new design using a faux leather plastic material, different from the Galaxy S4′s. And there also have been a smattering of rumors about a metal Galaxy S5 design that will usher in a new era at Samsung.

All the way back in June, Android Geeks suggested that the Galaxy S5 could utilize a new design standard from Samsung. The report suggested an aluminum build though it had little else to offer. Things have perked up though as an ETNews report asserts that Samsung is building a new line in its Gumi plant in Korea which will be capable of producing smartphone casings in magnesium or aluminum. This was followed by a report from Taipei Times that states that Samsung was in talks with Catcher Technology Company to deliver a metal case for a premium Galaxy smartphone for 2014. Catcher Technology Company supplies metal frames to Apple for its MacBook Air line.

Samsung has been known to toss around design prototypes, just like any company developing a big product, so it’s possible that it does have a metal Galaxy S5 in development. But rumors and prototypes don’t guarantee anything and at this point, we aren’t sold on the Galaxy S5 sporting a metal design. But it appears that next year has as good of a chance as any.

There is also chatter about a dust and water resistant Galaxy S5, something that wouldn’t be surprising given that the company unleashed a Galaxy S4 Active with those same properties earlier this year.
Display

The size of the Samsung Galaxy S display continues to grow with the Samsung Galaxy S4 sporting the biggest size and best resolution yet in the form of a 5-inch Super AMOLED panel that offers 1080p resolution and a high pixel-per-inch count. We haven’t heard anything about the Galaxy S5 display just yet but we have seen something interesting emerge out of Korea in recent days.

That something interesting is the Samsung Galaxy Round, a device that is considered a prototype, and one that is utilizing Samsung’s Youm flexible display technology that it showed off back at CES 2013. The screen is unbreakable and sports a curve on the y-axis making it different from the curves seen with older curved screens.

The Galaxy Round is seen as somewhat of a test device for Samsung’s technology and thus, it could pave the way for future devices, like, the Samsung Galaxy S5. We haven’t seen anything tie the Galaxy S5 to Samsung Youm, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Samsung gets it on board its next device considering that it reportedly almost use the technology for the Galaxy Note 3.
Specs

As for the rest of the device’s specifications, we’ve heard a number of different things. First, rumors have been swirling about the device’s camera. Korea’s Electronic Times News reported back in August that the Galaxy S5 would be coming with a new 16MP sensor with Optical Image Stabilization technology on board.

This conflicts with two other sensors that could potentially come inside the Galaxy S5. The first, an 8MP camera with in-house ISOCELL technology that could help cameras on Samsung smartphones capture more light and retain increased sharpness. Samsung says that mass production will start in the fourth quarter, a time frame just ahead of the rumored Galaxy S5 launch.

The Galaxy S4 is a prime example of Samsung’s release approach.

Samsung also recently announced a new 13MP sensor that could potentially come with the Galaxy S5 and bring even better photos taken in low-light environments. This sensor is evidently planned to go into production in the early part of 2014 which also lines up with a possible Galaxy S5 launch.

Whatever the case, it looks like the Galaxy S5 will be outfitted with an upgraded camera sensor rather than retain the Galaxy S4′s 13MP sensor that replaced the previous 8MP camera.

Rumors have also been flying around about the device’s processor. Originally, the device was thought to be coming with a 64-bit Exynos 5430 processor but the latest rumors out of Korean publication DDaily suggest that the device could deliver a chip that is part of the company’s new Exynos 6 series of chips. At this point, it’s clear that it will be a 64-bit processor and powerful.

Other Galaxy S5 spec rumors include whispers about the device potentially missing out on a fingerprint reader and improved wireless charging that will increase the range so that users can charge the phone without mounting it on the charger itself. Neither has been ruled out just yet.
Software

No word yet on the Samsung Galaxy S5 software but we have a pretty good idea about what consumers can expect. Samsung usually puts the latest software on board its devices which means that the Android 4.4 KitKat update that is set to arrive later on this year is a prime candidate for the Galaxy S5′s Android software.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 will reportedly skip a fingerprint sensor.
One crazy rumor out of AndroidSas claims that the device, which again is rumored to be skipping a fingerprint sensor, could use eye scanning technology for added security. The report doesn’t have any information about the actual technology which makes it very flimsy at this point. While we’re skeptical, there is technology out there that, in theory, could be baked into Samsung’s Galaxy S5 to offer something similar. Whether or not it provides a secure experience remains to be seen and this point, a fingerprint reader seems more likely.
Carriers
We haven’t heard anything about possible Samsung Galaxy S5 carriers just yet and we don’t expect to hear anything until much later in the process. Last year, carrier information emerged during CES 2013 when the device was reportedly in Las Vegas being shopped to AT&T executives. Like there was any doubt that the Galaxy S4, one of the most anticipated devices of the year, wouldn’t be headed to AT&T.

At this point, consumers can feel confident that the Samsung Galaxy S5 will follow in the footsteps of its predecessors and emerge on a number of carriers in the United States. After all, Apple’s iPhone 5s finally caught up to the Galaxy S series with a launch on the four largest carriers in the United States including AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon will be heading to U.S. Cellular at some point in the future.

IPhone Owners Can Switch to Moto X Easier With Free Tool

The Moto X is one of the best smartphones on the market, tempting many iPhone 4s and iPhone 5 owners to upgrade to it instead of the iPhone 5s, and a new tool makes the switch even easier.

The Moto X is customizable with the Moto Maker service that lets users pick colors and startup information and now the process includes a free migration assistant that can connect to iCloud and download contacts and calendars directly to Gmail with no muss or fuss.

Many Android phones offer migration assistants to pull user data out of iTunes backups, but this is one of the first that offers the service directly in the order process.

Switch iPhone to Moto X with this new tool.

Punit Sonji, the VP of Product Management at Motorola Mobility, shares images of the iCloud to Gmail switcher tool in progress on the Moto Maker website. This appears to be an option only for new Moto X orders. GigaOm highlights a Motorola Help page that outlines how the process will work and what fields will transfer to Google.

Login to iCloud on the Moto Maker website to switch form iPhone to Moto X easier.

The Moto X comes with a Migrate app that connects to another Android phone for easy switching and setup, but the app does not connect to the iPhone. Samsung and HTC both offer iPhone connection services that perform similar operations and even go further by recommending apps users may want to use.

There is no word on if or when the service will come to Moto X owners who buy the device in stores or who already purchased one but need to switch over contacts and calendars from iCloud. Only AT&T smartphones are available through Moto Maker right now, but rumors suggest Verizon will become a part of the Moto X customization in November.

This is not going to be the dealbreaker for most users comparing Moto X vs. iPhone 5s, but an easy way to switch is very important for owners who will already need to re-learn how to use features on an Android phone for the first time.

Apple currently does not offer a switch tool to help Android users switch to iPhone. Users can sign in with Gmail, but this does not bring their photos, apps and other information over.

New Accessory Pegged for Wearable Galaxy Note 3 IFA Reveal

In addition to announcing the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 at IFA 2013 on September 4th, Samsung will reportedly show off a wearable Galaxy Note 3 accessory — the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch.

We already know Samsung is planning a Samsung Mobile Unpacked Episode 2 event for September 4th, where it will take the wraps off of the Galaxy Note 3, which we expect will come with a larger display, tweaked design and Android 4.3 on board.

With a larger display, it makes sense for Samsung to also unveil a small wearable Galaxy Note 3 accessory that puts a small screen on your wrist.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Samsung Galaxy Watch could be a perfect pair this fall.

According to SamMobile the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch is “confirmed” for the Unpacked Episode 2 announcement, where it will appear on stage with the Galaxy Note 3.

The Samsung Gear smartwatch may include a small flexible display that would allow the watch to use a decent size display without adding tons of bulk to a wrist. The Galaxy Gear smartwatch would likely use Bluetooth Low Power to connect to the Galaxy Note 3 and to other Android devices. Bluetooth LE is a standard feature in Android 4.3, and Samsung already supports it on some devices ahead of the Android 4.3 update.

With a constant connection the Galaxy Gear could easily put notifications from apps, texts and phone calls on your wrist, A Samsung patent shows a watch band that may include a microphone and speaker, which could deliver a Dick Tracy like wrist-phone feature. Hopefully users could also plug headphones in to listen to music and take calls on the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch.

Patent filing shows a sketch that could be part of the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch.

As smartphone sizes grow dramatically to 5-inches on the Galaxy S4 and approaching six inches on the Galaxy Note 3, a small wearable display is a perfect accessory. As part of the Galaxy line of devices, the Galaxy Gear smartwatch could be a perfect Galaxy Note 3 accessory.

The Galaxy Gear could bring notifications, maps and other information to your wrist without the need to pull a large smartphone out of a pocket or a purse.

After using a smart watch for a month or two in 2012, the appeal of a connected smartwatch was clear, but the implementation needed work. The video below shows 5 ways a smartwatch can change the way you use a smartphone.

This early smartwatch brought text messages, weather, news feeds, phone call notifications, a calendar and even a Starbucks app to pay for coffee to a user’s wrist. Nearly two years later we could be in for a more elegant design and enhanced usability.

There are only a few details about a Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch, but it is likely that Samsung will position it as a perfect Galaxy Note 3 accessory, and a great accessory for any other smartphone.

What is the Alcatel One Touch Idol?

You may not be aware of it but Alcatel is one of the biggest phone manufacturers in the world, the 6th biggest in fact. Low-cost feature phones made primarily for the Asian and African market are its bread and butter, but the One Touch range is Alcatel’s attempt to crack the smartphone market. At £200 the Idol is Alcatel’s mid-range offering in the One Touch line-up.

Focusing on design, user experience and value, the One Touch Idol combines an impressive 4.7 inch screen with a dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM in a smart, unibody design. The question is can it really compare to phones in that price bracket made by Samsung, Sony, Nokia, ZTE or HTC?

Alcatel One Touch Idol – DesignFrom a short distance the One Touch belies its £200 price tag. Covered in what looks like brushed metal you’d be forgiven for mistaking it for a much more expensive phone.

In hand you quickly realise and the back is made of hard plastic, but it is decent quality stuff. A ridge that runs around the entire edge of the phone ruins the Idol’s good looks a little and makes it look more plasticky than it needs to. On the other hand, it does help make a grippy surface and the Idol remains a handsome phone regardless. The lack of hard edges makes holding it for long periods of time comfortable, despite its size.

The One Touch Idol isn’t a small phone at 133 x 67.5 x 7.9 mm, but it is impressively light, just 109g. It has got the same screen real estate as the Google Nexus 4 or the HTC One, both of which are more expensive and a good 25% heavier.

The metal power button is located at the top of the phone and is firm and springy. Unless your hands are on the small side you shouldn’t have a problem reaching it to turn the screen on or off. The volume rocker is on the right hand side, providing easy access for adjustment and the obligatory three Android touch buttons are at the bottom of the screen.

Turn the phone over and you find the One Touch logo emblazoned on the back. The camera protrudes slightly above it, although not too much to ruin the aesthetics or snag on pockets.

Where the One touch Idol is a little let down is by its SIM and microSD card slots. These are covered by some flimsy plastic flaps. We’d have liked these to be a more robust, but on the plus side you shouldn’t notice too much unless you regularly swap SIM or microSD cards.

Our version was metallic grey with a further five metallic colour options available: pink, dark grey, red, blue and green.

Alcatel One Touch Idol – Screen and Sound Quality
One of our favourite aspects of the One Touch Idol is its screen. The 4.7-inch toughened glass display (Dragon Trail rather than Gorilla Glass in this instance) is streets ahead of most other phones in its price range.

Colours are bright and vivid, if a little oversaturated. It’s bright too, perfectly visible in a sunlit day, not that you’ll be noticing much with the British summer. Video is clear and detailed while text is sharp and crisp, making reading websites or eBooks a pleasure.

The mono speaker is loud enough to watch a movie or listen to music with company; if that’s something you intend to do.

Alcatel One Touch Idol – Performance and StorageWith a dual-core 1GHz CPU, PowerVR SGX 531 GPU and 1GB of RAM the One Touch Idol is zippy rather than super-fast. There was no lag when scrolling through menus or opening apps, which was helped by the fact that Alcatel doesn’t bloat Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with lots of additional software and processes.

In our AnTuTu 3.3 benchmarks it scored a respectable 6,527. What does this mean in real terms? Well performance is generally solid throughout use. Simple games like Candy Crush Saga or basic 3D games like Temple Run 2 run without a hitch. Play more graphically intensive games, however, and you’ll find some lag issues. Real Racing 3, for instance, is playable but stutters when cornering.

The One Touch Idol comes with 4GB of internal storage, enough to keep your most important apps on. This can be expanded to a much healthier 36GB with a 32GB microSD card, enough for most people to store all the music, apps and even video they want to have on the go.

How to Back Up a Windows Phone "Photos"

While Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 operating system might be the youngest of the major mobile operating systems, Microsoft has gone to great lengths to make backups available to Windows Phone users effortlessly.

Unlike the backup systems of Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android, there is no physical backup method for Windows Phone. Instead, the operating system relies on Microsoft’s SkyDrive cloud service to back up Windows Phone settings. Every Windows Phone user creates a Microsoft Account the moment they create an account on Windows Phone.

Here’s how to turn on these settings and back up most of the contents stored on your device to SkyDrive automatically. This way, all the information you want to keep is still there when you need it.
Backing Up Apps and Settings

Tap Settings.

Scroll down to ‘Backup’ under Settings.

Tap ‘app list + settings’. Tap the ‘on’ switch on the right hand side of the screen. From this moment on, your Windows Phone will automatically back up your Internet Explorer favorites, applications that are installed.

Tap the ‘back up now’ button to immediately back up all that information right now.
Backing Up Text Messages

Tap Settings.

Scroll down to ‘Backup’ under Settings.

Tap ‘text messages’. Tap the ‘on’ switches for text message backup and chat back up on the right.
Backing Up Photos & Videos

Tap Settings.

Scroll down to ‘Backup’ under Settings.

Tap ‘photos’. Under photos choose between ‘Best quality (needs Wi-Fi) or ‘Good quality (may use data plan)’. Tap either option to enable photo backup.

If you’d like to automatically back up videos and settings, choose either ‘Good quality (needs Wi-Fi)’ or ‘Best quality (needs Wi-Fi)’.

Open your web browser. To find all of your messages and pictures, login to Microsoft’sSkyDrive cloud back up service using the Microsoft Account and password that you used to set up your device.

From this moment on the Windows Phone device will automatically check SkyDrive for the latest text messages, app lists and photos on SkyDrive whenever it’s reset. It’s important to note that your contacts are automatically backed up by the operating system.

Google Reportedly Working On Android Game Console To Combat Apple

A report from the Wall Street Journal claims that Google is working on its own Android video game console to compete against a possible console from Apple.
The rumored Google video game console will come from the Google X hardware lab and will compete with the many Android consoles that are currently available, or that will come later this year. While Google is keeping a close eye on companies like Ouya and NVIDIA, the company’s biggest worry is Apple.
Some inside Google believe that Apple is working on a video game console as part of its next Apple TV hardware release. The goal of the alleged Android video game is to compete with the theoretical device from Apple.
Apple already laid the groundwork for more advanced gaming on its devices with the new Made For iPhone controller support in iOS 7. Paired with AirPlay on current Apple TV devices, those controllers could potentially turn the Apple TV into a sort of home video game console when paired with an iPhone or iPad.
Apple may add even more gaming features to the next iteration of the Apple TV, but the potential is already there even without new hardware. All Apple needs is game developer support.
Unfortunately, there are no details on how Google’s rumored Android video game console will work. Based on devices like the Ouya, GamePop and Project MOJO the Google console will likely be a small box that holds high-end phone or tablet chipsets. It’s not clear if Google will develop its own controllers like the other Android consoles or rely on third-party controllers that attach to smartphones like Apple’s probable strategy.
Google may release its Android home console this fall, though there’s a chance it might miss that window. If it does come out in fall, it will compete with new Apple iOS devices, Xbox One andPlayStation 4 in addition to all of the other Android consoles. Even without Google’s entry, the video game market is already quite crowded leading up to the holiday season.
